The role of private schools
Independent schools have always pioneered social and educational developments - and still are today. In Berlin, many parents decide against the primary school because they want a special school profile or because they completely turn away from the state system.
Independent schools as recognized substitute schools
Independent schools are an additional offer in the educational landscape of Berlin, which contributes its part to guarantee the diversity of educational programs. In the case of independent schools, a distinction is made between substitute schools, which replace state schools of a certain type, and so-called supplementary schools. Qualifications, certificates and transfer decisions obtained at recognized substitute schools have the same validity as at the corresponding publicly owned schools. The Mentora Gymnasium is a recognized substitute school.
Special school profile
A uniform school system designed only by the state would contradict Germany's pluralistic society. Schoolchildren have different abilities, inclinations and career aspirations. The more differentiated the school system is, the better it can respond to these differences, and the greater the educational success will be.
Independent schools, with their differentiated pedagogical, ideological and student-oriented profiles, can offer a particularly diverse range of options here. Private schools work independently and efficiently, and they can quickly adapt to new developments. Many independent general education schools have a special school profile. The main focus at the Mentora Gymnasium is STEM education as well as an international orientation. We see this focus as an opportunity to prepare adolescent young people for the demands and challenges of a diverse, complex, globalized and digitized world. We focus on skills such as adaptability, critical thinking, communication and interdisciplinarity.
